More than a dozen members of Michael Jackson's family plan to appear in a courtroom where the doctor charged with causing his death is due for a hearing.
Dr. Conrad Murray has pleaded not guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter. The hearing agenda Monday is procedural — assigning a judge to try the case and setting a preliminary hearing date. Also at issue will be a medical board request to revoke his license to practice.
Allan Parachini, spokesman for the Los Angeles…

J. G. Farrell and Muriel Spark were among the authors shortlisted Thursday for an unusual take on Britain's most prestigious literary award, the Booker Prize.
The Lost Booker Prize -- other contenders for which include Patrick White and Nina Bawden -- is being awarded for books from 1970 which missed out the first time around because of a rule change in 1971.
Previously the prize, which began in 1969, was retrospective, meaning the 1970 award went to novels published the…

Prosecutors say an 81-year-old woman pulled a revolver from her fanny pack and tried to shoot the wife of a Grammy-winning jazz pianist near the elevator of their New York City condominium.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown says Maria Cartegena pulled out the gun Tuesday night and fired at the 73-year-old wife of Eddie Palmieri. The bullet grazed Iraida Palmieri's scalp.
Cartegena pleaded not guilty Wednesday to attempted murder. Her attorney says he can't…

Wolfgang Wagner, the grandson of composer Richard Wagner and the leader of the Bayreuth opera festival for more than half a century, has died, the festival said. He was 90.
Wagner died on Sunday, the festival said in a brief statement on its Web site. It did not give further details.
"Wolfgang Wagner dedicated his whole life to the legacy of his grandfather," the festival said — adding that his long service as the event's leader means that he "goes into history as the…

Disney 3-D adventure "Alice in Wonderland" retained the top spot at North American box offices for a third straight week, collecting $34.5 million and beating three new films including romantic comedy "The Bounty Hunter."
"Diary of a Wimpy Kid," based on the first book in the popular series by Jeff Kinney, claimed the No. 2 spot with $21.8 million as children and parents turned out in solid numbers and pushed adult-oriented "Bounty Hunter" to third with $21 million, according to…

Lady Gaga is firing back at a music producer who claims he launched her career and is suing her for $30.5 million.
Her lawyer said in a court filing made public Friday the agreement at the heart of the suit was "unlawful."

"Avatar" is coming to DVD, but not yet in 3-D.
Twentieth Century Fox announced Tuesday that James Cameron's sci-fi epic will be released on Blu-ray and regular DVD on April 22. The studio noted that the release date coincides with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
No announcement was made regarding a 3-D DVD release, but a Fox spokesman said one can be expected in the future. The market for 3-D home video is still in the nascent stages, though TVs equipped for 3-D are…

The Federal Communications Commission on Monday released a set of goals to modernize high-speed Internet access for Americans, including plans to free up more airwaves for mobile services.

In the report called "Connecting America: The National Broadband Plan," the agency says it is seeking expanded…

Teen power won out on "American Idol" as Katie Stevens claimed a place in the top 12 while a more experienced singer got the ax.
Stevens, 17, earned viewer support even though the show's judges were disappointed earlier this week by her performance of "Breakaway" that Randy Jackson likened to karaoke.
Lilly Scott, despite earning praise for her artistry on "I Fall to Pieces," was among the four contestants dropped Thursday. They included Alex Lambert of North Richland Hills,…
